According to Bring Me The News, a severe geomagnetic storm, classified as G4, akin to a Category 4 hurricane, is set to occur. This phenomenon is part of the sun’s active phase and is driven by multiple coronal mass ejections from sunspot AR3664.

The ideal time to watch this natural light show will be from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. on Saturday, although the lights will begin to appear as early as 10 p.m. Friday. The entire event promises a rare and stunning display usually reserved for Arctic skies.

Even residents in light-polluted cities will have a chance to witness the northern lights. For the best experience, though, it’s recommended to find spots away from street lights. This spectacular event is made possible by a sunspot 16 times the diameter of Earth, setting the stage for one of the most amazing auroras seen in recent years.
