Detroit Water Department and Belle Isle Nature Center Hosted Back-to-School Event

Detroit families were treated to a special event as the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) teamed up with Belle Isle Nature Center to host a back-to-school bash that was both fun and educational. The event provided free bookbags, school supplies, and more for students preparing for the new school year.

On Sunday, August 18, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Belle Isle Nature Center transformed into a hub of activity, according to the ONS. Children enjoyed live book readings in small groups, and each child took home the book that was read, along with a bookbag filled with school essentials. With 300 bookbags given out, there was plenty to go around!

The event wasn’t just for the kids—parents and guardians also benefited. DWSD offered informational workshops on water-saving tips and plumbing advice, turning the back-to-school event into a learning opportunity for the whole family. It was a great way to prepare for the school year while also gaining useful knowledge to save money at home.

This collaboration between DWSD and the Belle Isle Nature Center highlighted their commitment to the community. By providing resources that supported education and wellness, they showed how city services can play a vital role in everyday life. Those who attended on August 18 had the chance to gear up for the school year while enjoying the natural beauty of Belle Isle.
