Roller Skating is Alive and Well in New York

There may not be many roller rinks left, but that hasn’t kept people from getting their roll on in New York.  According to the New York Times, with people searching out things to entertain themselves, the trend of roller skating wherever there’s a space to do it thrived last year.  Warehouses, playgrounds and basketball courts were all fair game.

Some skating events are organized, others just pop up, but the effect is the same.  “Oh, my gosh, it was great,” said Lionel Laurent, a 45-year-old skating instructor.  “Clubs are not open, so we are doing this.”

You don’t have to be an expert to try it out.  There are many events, some designed just for people starting out, and many others for experienced skaters.  The important part is that you have fun, with many skaters personalizing their skates as a way of expressing themselves.

And it doesn’t look like this trend is fading any time soon.  “I can find skating any day of the week,” said Cynthia Brown, who lives in the Bronx. “They are doing it everywhere. It’s really crazy and amazing.”
